There was just an interesting article in ProSales Online - 'I'd Love to, But I Can't Right Now' - Amid hard times, dealers have found they no longer can give back to the community.
The gist of the article was how Lumber & Building Material suppliers across the country, reporting drops in revenue of 50% or more, have had to cut charitable giving in their communities. Some Lumber & Building Materials dealers reportedly have put a halt to all giving until sales returm.
We know non-profits here on Cape Cod and in Southeastern Massachusetts, are struggling to stay afloat, just as many businesses are. As a company, who has always dedicated many dollars to helping local charities, it's difficult to say "No" when people ask for help. But what about the responsibility to employees and their families? It's difficult to tell employees their paychecks will be affected, then turn around and donate to a non-profit, no matter how worthy.
As we review donation requests, our decisions are based on items of need - food, shelter, ramps/access, housing. We've also taken to performing our community service in other ways - such as donating a kitchen or bath, spending time at a Camp helping to refurbish. With the help of our vendor partners, these projects become a bit easier to pull off.
So when your childs school, local food pantry, homeless shelter or other worthy organization is in need of help, don't hesitate to ask. Just remember to support local business - because local business is who supports local non-profits as much as they can.
