Since I joined Mid-Cape Home Centers in 2007, I've been pleasantly suprised at the openness of our builders and architects to start thinking of marketing in new ways ... including social media. I keep telling them statistics about how newspapers have experienced a 65% drop in circulation since 2001, DVR/Tivo has changed the way we watch tv, and who even reads a phone book anymore with Google right at your fingertips.
So now customers have started asking me about Twitter. I keep telling them that I am certainly no expert..but they're still asking. So here's my post about how I feel about Twitter and whether or not this is a good thing for our builder customers.
LOVE IT and YES. Perfect...done writing for today!
In all seriousness, yes, I think that Twitter can be a builders new best friend. As more and more people and businesses use Twitter as a communications tool, the chance to enhance your potential client "community" is never ending. And the best part about it - it's FREE (well, other than your time and yes, I know, time is money).
The hardest part is figuring out what to write - using only 144 characters. (called a "Tweet")
It's actually quite simple...just be yourself. Write about a cool project your working on, a funny quip from your kid, upload a picture on the new kitchen you just installed, attach a useful link that you think your customers (and potential customers) might find useful. Don't tweet about what you ate for breakfast and about how you're the "awesomest" builder around. If you haven't already, make the investment in a Blackberry, iPhone or other smart phone - so that while you're taking a quick coffee break, you can tweet if something pops into your head.
It takes time - don't expect to be all Ashton Kutcher in the first week (Ashton has 3million + followers on Twitter). Building a community is a lot like building a house ... you can't rush perfection.
