This would certainly make the process of planning and designing your new dream kitchen a breeze! Ahhhh...at last, they are not gifted with this ability (and if you walk into a kitchen design house and the designer has a crystal ball, you might want to beat feet!)
Your kitchen designer should possess the qualities of creativity, kindess, patience and above all, the ability to listen to what you're saying. However, you need to do some advance planning to make sure that your needs are expressed clearly. So before you start your search, think about a few things...
1. How do you use your kitchen? Are you a gourmet chef who needs top of the line EVERYTHING. Do you entertain large groups? What do you need for storage options? Make a list of all the things you use your kitchen for - this will help your designer immensly.
2. Are you looking to move walls, plumbing, electrical etc..? Or are you simply making updates to the existing space? If you're thinking of a total overhaul, you want to enlist the help of a professional contractor ... and make sure he/she has experience in kitchen work. Your contractor doesn't need to be the designer, but he/she will be overseeing all the extraneous things you need to make your kitchen project a big success!
3. Draw a sketch. We know you're not Picasso (maybe a bad example...Picasso would have drawn one FUNKY kitchen!!). A one dimensional sketch is fine ... enough at least to give your designer a bouncing off point for your idea brainstorming.
4. Lastly - interview. Don't feel the pressure of just working with the 1st person you meet. You should feel entirely comfortable with the person who will ultimately design the most important room in your home. (SHAMELESS SALES PLUG HERE ... Mid-Cape Home Centers has the largest team of kitchen designers in Southeastern Massachusetts.)
Good luck with your project and if we can help in any way, let us know!
